PSHE
Intent
At Putnoe Primary School, pupils’ well-being, happiness, and safety are our priority and PSHE Education is the key vehicle through which we share this with pupils. Our PSHE Education teaching provision promotes opportunities to link British values, the schools Behaviour Policy and our Values Education. It helps to give children the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives and to become more informed, active, responsible citizens.
We provide our pupils with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our curriculum supports children to understand and respect our common humanity: its diversity and its differences, so that they can go on to form the effective, fulfilling relationships, that are an essential part of life and learning. Safeguarding is a key element of our PSHE curriculum, as pupils learn about their own identity, risks, decision-making and how to keep themselves safe, both mentally, physically, and sexually.
During their time at Putnoe Primary School, all pupils will learn about:
- Relationships- focusing upon family and people; caring friendships; respectful relationships and asking for help
- Health and wellbeing; safety (including online); physical and mental wellbeing and growing and changing
- Living in the wider world; belonging to a community; media resilience; digital literacy; money and work
Implementation
At Putnoe Primary School we understand that PSHE is a vital part of primary education and needs to be taught weekly. This enables teachers to ensure that the full coverage of PSHE Education and Values Education are taught within their year group, as well as to address issues, which arise specific to their class. A vital part of high-quality PSHE lessons is the use of discussion, drama, and role play scenarios. This enables all pupils to have a voice and be confident to ask questions. PSHE Education is also an important part of school assemblies, where children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured.
The Programme of Study has been taken from the PSHE association and adapted to fit the needs of the pupils at Putnoe Primary School. It includes suggested resources, information for teachers and quality key texts. The Programme of study is broken down into three core themes:
- Core theme 1. Relationships (R) – Autumn Term (All year groups will cover the 3 themes)
- Core theme 2. Living in the Wider World (L) – Spring A and Summer B
- Core theme 3. Health and Wellbeing (H) – Spring B and Summer A and B
Each term has a core theme focus which ensures consistency across year groups and phases and provides a clear progression from Year 1 to Year 6.
PSHE education is delivered implicitly as well as explicitly, through many areas of school life. Assemblies, that link into British Values as well as the School Values. PE lessons, where pupils learn different ways of keeping fit. Science lessons where pupils learn how bodies change and the importance of personal hygiene such as Dental Care in year 4. E-safety lessons within Computing and campaigns like Anti-Bullying Week, these all help support the teaching of the core principles of PSHE Education.
Impact
The impact of PSHE Education can be measured in a variety of ways. At Putnoe Primary, we recognise and celebrate the importance of the pupil’s voice, and their individual experience of PSHE education. Pupil voice, and lessons captured via media (photographs/videos), will form the heart of how we measure the impact of our teaching, where pupils can talk about their emotions and celebrate their successes. The Anti-bullying ambassadors can confidently communicate and mediate with their peers.
By the time our children leave our school they will:
- be able to approach a range of real-life situations and apply their skills and attributes to help navigate themselves through modern life
- be on their way to becoming healthy, open minded, respectful, socially, and morally responsible, active members of society
- appreciate difference and diversity
- recognise and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty
- be able to understand and manage their emotions
- be able to look after their mental health and well-being
- be able to develop positive, healthy relationship with their peers both now and in the future.
- understand the physical aspects involved in RSE at an age-appropriate level
- have respect for themselves and others.
- have a positive self esteem
Additionally, pupils will have the ability to recognise and develop good relationships, the reinforcement of positive mental and physical health, understanding how their body will change and grow, the development of respect and tolerance for all, an understanding of society and the role of the individual in a community – these are the skills that will equip our children for life.
